How to Apply Essential Oils to Your Body

When I first received my Young Living Starter Kit and joined our member Facebook groups, I was totally overwhelmed by all the ways to use the oils.

While it made sense to add a few drops to the diffuser — kind of like lighting a candle with a personalized fragrance recipe — the application of oils bewildered me.

How can we know if the oil is safe for applying to the body?

Good question, right? Well, the Young Living website offers cautions and instructions for every oil, so you can always start there!

How can we know if the application is effective?

Another great question. Time and experience will prove the effectiveness to you. Start with a small application and work your way up to see the impact. I became a believer of the effectiveness after using Deep Relief instead of popping another pill for joint and muscle pain!

Can we do harm by applying oils to our bodies?

Well, not necessarily harm but definitely irritation. Some oils are considered “hot” and can burn the skin. However, when they are applied with a carrier oil, and not near the eyes, they can be quite effective. Examples of hot oils and blends include Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, Exodus II™, and Thieves®. For some people, Peppermint’s cooling sensation can be too intense. You can do a patch test procedure prior to first use by applying 1–2 drops of essential oil to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1–2 hours for any noticeable reaction; however, reactions occur usually within 5–10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation or develop a rash, add V-6 or another carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed.

A 3-Step Simplified Process for Applying Oils

1 – Get a carrier oil, such as Almond or Coconut Oil. I use this brand and I am very happy with it.

2 –Grab a Box of Rollers. I like this set because it includes the mini-funnel and roller ball remover.

3 – Create Your Body Application Rollers!  Add drops of the single oil, oil blend, or combination blends to the roller.

Determining the number of drops is the tricky part, right? How do you know how much to use? My recommendation is to use someone else’s recipe {like the ones found in our Simplified Wellness group} or start small when creating your own recipe. For example, I usually use less than 6 drops of any one oil in a roller bottle. Once you add the essential oils, then fill the rest of the bottle with the carrier oil. This will help the oil spread evenly on your skin.
